This is the Pixel 9, what Google calls as a phone full of firsts, and to which I'm gonna partially agree. See, this particular phone represents a change in Google's ever-changing approach to smartphones. First we had the Nexus which started expensive, then became affordable, only to become expensive again. Then we had the Pixel which started expensive, only to become a border-line midranger with the Pixel 5 in order to drop the price. By the time the Pixel 6 series launched, Google made the logical decision of giving users a choice.

It doesn’t look as good as the rest of the Pixel camera systems, but I don’t hate it either. I think they’re laid out like this so you can use the lenses at a better angle when using the camera in a folded state of the phone, similar to Samsung’s Flex Mode. Overall, this is the device I’m most excited about testing because, on the surface, it shows little compromise over choosing the regular Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL.

Most of the time, at least. The AI is still prone to making stuff up, only occasionally, but often enough that you’ll want to double-check its answers, which undermines the time-saving benefits of using it for many serious tasks. But look past the flashy Gemini chatbot tricks and you’ll find a fundamentally impressive piece of underlying hardware, one where artificial intelligence has been used to enable things like advanced photo editing at a touch, near-instant transcription and formatting of meeting notes, the ability to summarise phone calls and search for and recall important information from screenshots.

The phone also feels thicker than other phones, from other brands, and the camera bump seems even bigger again. It’s also impressive that overheating and battery life are nonissues this year, as these are two things that have notoriously been a thorn in the side of Pixel phones. Throw that together with the expected excellence in camera quality, (mostly) good AI features, and clean, up-to-date software, and you’re looking at a darn good package. The Pixel 9 Pro XL brings relatively major stylistic changes plus some hardware upgrades that do make it a better phone than the previous generation. The brighter display is a welcome improvement, of course, and it's possibly the brightest in the business, though it's not like the 8 Pro was lacking in this respect. Battery life has been a blemish for Pixels in head-to-head comparisons, and the new model is a step up in this respect, though it remains in a trailing position among its peers. The Pixel's biggest selling point lies in its AI capabilities, Google wants us to believe. It doesn’t look as good as the rest of the Pixel camera systems, but I don’t hate it either. I think they’re laid out like this so you can use the lenses at a better angle when using the camera in a folded state of the phone, similar to Samsung’s Flex Mode. Overall, this is the device I’m most excited about testing because, on the surface, it shows little compromise over choosing the regular Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL.
