A Pixel Competitor… Premium materials, meticulous design, a high-res screen, and great performance. HP seeks to redefine the Chromebook with the closest thing we’ve seen to a Pixel since Google first introduced it.

The HP Chromebook 13 has a lightweight, portable and posh aluminum design. It's more expensive than other Chromebooks, and the Chrome OS is naturally limited. The HP Chromebook 13 satisfyingly combines the cloud-based simplicity of the Chrome OS with a stylish modern design, even if it's expensive for a Chromebook.

If you absolutely have to pick up a Chromebook, then your premium models are rare as hens' teeth. The closest competition was Google's own $1,300 Chromebook Pixel. The recently discontinued Pixel was even more overpriced than this HP, but since you can't get one, the Chromebook 13 G1 is your only real option. We'll be more bullish on this segment once Android app support is live and stable, but until then your money is probably better spent elsewhere.

The HP Chromebook 13 G1 fulfills the promises made by the Google Chromebook Pixel. It has the power to do real work, with a higher-than-full-HD screen. Yes, you will pay a lot for this version, but it is made of sturdy metal, yet is one of the thinnest and lightest chromebooks. Out of the recent chromebooks we've seen aimed at corporate use, this is the one we'd recommend. It might cost more than you're used to for a chromebook, but remember, you won't be replacing it every other year like you would with a consumer model.

Lack of touchscreen functionality is a feature that's going to be missed on the HP Chromebook 13 when Android apps arrive on Chrome OS. However, considering that HP targets the business crowd with the notebook, most of its buyers won't find this to be a dealbreaker. Pricing of the notebook ranges between $499 for a variant with Intel Celeron CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 1080p display, all the way to a hefty $1,029 for a notebook with Core m7, 16GB of RAM, and a QHD+ screen. The Core m5 model we tested goes for $819.

The HP Chromebook 13 is a first-rate device, on par with the likes of the Dell Chromebook 13 and Google Chromebook Pixel. We loved its impeccable aluminum and magnesium chassis, and that it was considerably thinner and lighter than those Dell and Google offerings. Its QHD+ screen and backlit keyboard were excellent, too, as was the performance from its Intel Core m5 processor.

This is where things get sort of weird. Right now, you don’t really need a touchscreen on a Chromebook. But this fall, when Chrome OS and Android begin their conscious coupling and the Google Play store comes to Chrome OS, you’ll have literally millions of reasons to want one. (HP says the next Chromebook 13 will have one.) Over the next few months, Android apps will force Chromebook makers to reconsider absolutely everything about their devices. We’ll see new form factors, new sensors, new ideas about what a laptop even is when a laptop can run smartphone apps. If you can wait to buy a Chromebook, sit tight. If you can’t, buy this one.

The HP Chromebook 13 G1 offers the impeccably good looks of a premium laptop, tons of speed and none of the fuss that complicates other operating systems. After all of that upside, though, the Chromebook 13 G1's price, battery life and heat should give any shopper a moment of pause before hitting order.

Even with this issue, HP’s Chromebook 13 earns a very high rating. It’s light, fast, and beautiful, and it costs a little less money than Google’s Chromebook Pixel. It far outstrips corporate competition from Dell’s Chromebook 13 and Acer’s Chromebook 14. This is the new Chromebook to beat.
