So, would I recommend you buying this device? If selfie camera is really high on the list of your priority, then go for this. If not, then there are many other devices which performs as good as this in many fields and some even outperform this. Some of the rivals are mentioned here which you can take a loot at while considering to buy this device.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes loaded with good selfie camera and the performance is quite satisfactory, if not smooth. The display is a let down and so is the dual-rear camera. The battery could have been more in this one, though the gesture support looks good. Overall, if you are a selfie-centric person and want a smartphone with a good camera and is ready to compromise a little on battery and display, the Redmi Y2 can be considered as an option. Else, you have Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, Honor 9 Lite and even Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 that gives you better design and performance around the same price points.

So is Redmi Y2 the ideal budget phone for selfies? The selfies are impressive for the price. The overall performance is not bad either, though it could have been better for the asking price. However, the rear camera needs some serious improvements as it is quite slow. Plus the HD+ resolution display is a disappointment at this price.

The Redmi Y2 comes out as a reliable all-rounder with a strong focus on the imaging prowess. It may not be as powerful as its rivals, but that doesn't deter the Redmi Y2 to cover the basics right.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is a slightly better attempt at a selfie-focused smartphone than the model it replaces. It has proven hardware that is capable of delivering a smooth user experience, plus MIUI 9.5 which has a lot of added features. The camera performance is good in daylight but goes down a little in low light. Selfies are the highlight of this smartphone and it does deliver on that front, with good shots in various lighting conditions.

The Redmi Y2 is sort of a confusing affair. Its pricing, of course, has a lot to do with it. But unlike the Redmi Y1, that I did not recommend to buyers, the Redmi Y2 has every ingredient in the book to qualify as a viable alternative, to the Redmi Note 5. It isn't perfect. It has a plastic body and no protective coating up-top. The display is 720p+, and the Redmi Note 5 offers much better battery life, in comparison.

At first glance, the Redmi Y2 looks like a capable phone even though the pricing makes it compete with its own Redmi siblings. The Redmi Y2 is quite basic, apart from the camera shenanigans, but sometimes that is just good enough for a budget smartphone. We’ll find out more in our detailed review.

Build and finishing is excellent, curvy design, feels good, antenna outline, brushed metallic finishing. The Redmi Y2 will be available in Gold, Dark Grey and Rose Gold color options.

There is no doubt that Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is a reasonably good phone for the price. It offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, Android Oreo based operating system, 16MP AI-based selfie camera -- all at a starting point of Rs 9,999. The camera, which is said to be the key highlight of the device, leaves a lot to be desired. For anyone who is buying Xiaomi for the first time, the Redmi Y2 will certainly check the right boxes. But for a repeat Xiaomi buyer, you may feel that these features are being pulled in from other Xiaomi handsets. Xiaomi seems to be following the mantra “If it ain't broke, don't fix it,” which is working pretty well for the company.

At Rs 9,999 for the 3 GB/ 32 GB variant (and Rs 12,999 for the 4 GB/ 64 GB one), the Redmi Y2 positions itself as one of the most affordable selfie centric smartphones around but actually comes across as a very good all-rounder. The smartphone ticks all the important boxes — good design, commendable cameras, decent battery life and generally smooth performance, and delivers all of these at a price that is in best Xiaomi tradition, very pocket-friendly. Yes, it faces a lot competition from the likes of the recently released Honor 7A, Honor 7C, newcomers like Mobiistar XQ Dual and Realme 1, and not to forget its own cousin the Redmi Note 5 which offers a higher resolution display and bigger battery at the same price, but the Redmi Y2 definitely seems capable of taking them on, if not beating them. Its selfie camera might be in the limelight, but make no mistake, there is much more to the Y2 than just selfie snaps.

To conclude, the smartphone does offer some good selfie experience and it features some decent specifications. As for the competition is concerned the phone will face a stiff competition with the likes of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, and more.

Clearly, the Redmi Y2 provides a lot of value but we feel that it needs a little more performance optimization. On a camera front, it caters well to the selfie-loving crowd. If you’re not a part of that audience though, the Redmi Note 5 generally performs a little better despite the same internals. Unless you specifically need a high-resolution front-facing camera, we’d highly recommend spending a little more and going in for the Redmi Note 5 or better still, the Pro. The Redmi Y2 starts at Rs. 9,999 for the 3GB RAM with 32GB storage version and the 4GB RAM with 64GB storage version costs Rs. 12,999. It will be available exclusively from Amazon.in and Mi.com as well as Mi Home Stores starting from June 12th with launch offers.
